This verb is essentially regular, except that the é vowel changes to è in some places. The change is basically as follows:

• The vowel changes wherever é would otherwise end up in a closed syllable– that is, in a syllable ending a consonant (the open [e] vowel essentially doesn't occur in closed syllables in French);
• In practice, that means in the present tense (indicative and subjunctive) except in the nous and vous forms;
• In terms of pronunciation, most speakers nowadays pronounce the conditional and future forms (préférerais etc) as though they were written préfèrerais etc. A few writers spell these forms to reflect the pronunciation. However, the traditional (and most widely adopted) spelling convention is the slightly misleading one shown here.
