This is the so-called regular -re pattern according to the categories used in many English-speaking analyses of French. (Many French-speaking analyses don't actually make a distinction between this pattern and other "irregular verb" patterns.) Characteristic features of this pattern include:

  • in practise, the infinitive always ends in -endre, -andre, -ondre, -erdre or -ordre;
  • past participles ending in -u;
  • the [d] consonant is pronounced in all forms of the verb except the singular present tense forms, which sound like the infinitive minus the final -dre.
